What are we doing?

Introduction

The BlackBox experiment is intended to test a redundant and independent data storage system in sounding rocket missions. The system is to be investigated with regard to the effects occurring during rocket launch, the prevailing ambient conditions as well as the results due to a crash. The influences include accelerations as well as different temperatures. In addition, the system shall have a reliable localization system with whicha recovery of the data memory can be ensured.

Origins

Within the scope of the AQUASONICproject, based onthe STERN program,a system development for data storage backup was planned for future sounding rockets. At the beginning, this was published as an interdisciplinary project module in the master study program "Aerospace Technologies"with focus on “Space Engineering” at the university of applied sciences HS Bremen. During the research the chance to apply for the REXUS/BEXUS programwas seen. Therefore, the idea to develop the project as a stand-alone system that could be used for any sounding rockets came up.The REXUS/BEXUS Program is well known and respected at HS Bremen, IAT (Institute of AerospaceTechnology). Thus, the decision was made to present the system for the program. The presentation took place at the Selection Workshop at DLR Bonn from 28th to 29th of November 2016.The committee chose the project as an experiment for the tenth cycle of the campaign with a place on the REXUS 24 with launch in 2018.
